Sixth century BC: Jerusalem is captured and destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar II, the Temple of Solomon is desecrated, and the Jews are expelled from their homeland. The Prophet Jeremiah understood this defeat as a punishment from God, his lamentations so powerful that they inspired European composers centuries later to set them in music reflecting their time and place: Tallis of England, de Morales of Spain, and Lassus of Germany.
