Today mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo, tenor Andrew Hadji, tenor Mihail Mihaylov, soprano Dilyara Idrisova, baritone Kidon Choi and bass Jongsoo Yang, competed for one of the six spots in the finals for the Aria division of the CMIM 2018 competition. Tomorrow six more candidates will participate. Canadian Emily D’Angelo was the undeniable winner of the evening. Her performance was flawless. I can’t believe that she is only 23 years old! She is years beyond her age in terms of technical ability, interpretation and music comprehension. In fact she might be the most mature artist of the competition. She started with “Smanie implacabili”…
Today mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski, baritone John Brancy, soprano Gemma Summerfield and baritone Julien Van Mellaerts performed to a full house at Bourgie Hall in the Finals of the Art Song division of CMIM 2018. Although the official results will only be announced on June 7, the winner appears to be Brancy. He and his pianist Peter Dugan understood how to captivate the audience, building a program that crescendo to a grand finale with Rachmaninov’s Zdes Khorocho and Vesennié vody. I tweeted during the performance “Back in April we predicted John Brancy would earn first prize at CMIM 2018 for Art…

I recently had the great pleasure of conversing with Joseph Rouleau, a Quebec bass of international reputation, still working on projects at 89. Why, in the middle of a singing career that would have filled more than one life, was he interested in the development of young artists? “If we go back to the 1950s, there was not much [opportunity],” he replied. André Turp, Robert Savoie, Maureen Forrester and I, we all made our first tours with Jeunesses Musicales. “I made my first tour in 1950-1951 with Jeunesses Musicales.
